Scooter Willis

Founder

Scooter founded the non-profit TechGarage in 2013 to use robotics and challenge-based learning to answer the question how hard can you make it and how young is too young to find your passion as an engineer. Turns out if you don't tell a fourth grader that they are doing college-level engineering work they rise to the challenge and after a couple of years have the expertise critical for an ever-increasing technology-driven economy. TechGarage partnered with after-school programs that worked in low-income communities to do cutting edge robotics, drones and programming in a two day a week year-round program run by FAU engineering students working as robotics coaches. In 2018, TechGarage worked with the Boys and Girls Club of Palm Beach County to bring cutting edge technology programs to the Belle Glade, Riveria Beach, West Palm and Delray communities. Every challenge was met with enthusiasm by the Smartphone generation who are passionate about technology and problem-solving. When COVID hit the after-school programs were canceled and it was clear the shift to virtual school was going to be problematic for the lack of internet and computers in the homes of the Smartphone generation.  Scooter started Project HiFi to challenge recent high school graduates to solve the problem of installing high-speed internet in their neighborhood and be the solution to the digital divide problem that they know so well.

Don't let the hair fool you James is all business. James is a recent graduate of Village Academy in Delray and has been awarded a full scholarship to the University of Florida where he is planning to major in Mechanical Engineering. If you want to get him to smile with a laugh mention the time he met a sidewalk that didn't cooperate when installing conduit under it with a water hole. James won the battle but required a deep hole only to find a tree root was his enemy and the sidewalk is now safe from the root below. James has been a member of the TechGarage robotics program for two years and will be missed but we plan on having him work remotely on CAD drawings for future projects.
